Normal variants: Recurrent artery of Heubner and the medial lenticulostriate arteries

The recurrent artery of Heubner is a large medial lenticulostriate artery. It has a characteristic course. It most commonly arises from the A2 segment of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA), then parallels the horizontal portions of the ACA and proximal middle cerebral arteries. When it reaches the region of the lenticulostriate group, it gives off a number of medial lenticulostriate branches. In the case below, the recurrent artery of Heubner arises from the A1 segment.

The characteristic course of the recurrent artery of Heubner is well visualized. The recurrent artery of Heubner and several medial lenticulostriate arteries arise from the A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery.
