Case # 2                                       <<Back    Next>>

55 year old female with biopsy-proven, left  2 to 3 o'clock, multifocal, invasive lobular carcinoma. MRI performed to evaluate remainder of breast.
Sagittal T2W FS Axial T1W FS post gad
MRI: The lobular carcinoma is not included on these images. Representative images demonstrate a focus of progressive enhancement, which was not felt to be suspicious. There was no discrete mass identified within this asymmetric focus of enhancement.
Enhancement curve

First post-enhancement phase

Third post-enhancement phase

Mammogram: unremarkable in this region
Diagnosis: DCIS (found in mastectomy specimen)
The lack of an identifiable mass was reassuring at the time of the study. If the presence of an additional lesion would have changed surgical planning, this focus would have undergone further work-up with ultrasound and directed mammographic views. The literature reports DCIS to have variable contrast enhancement.
